Waiawa derives its name from the beautiful whenua and awa that sustains our whānau. The awa weaves around our whenua with a constant song and nourishes all its inhabitants. The native plants that form the base of our products are sourced from this land, grown organically from seed, and nurtured by hand. We harvest sustainably in season to ensure we are looking after the whenua and awa, allowing it to replenish itself. We do so to maintain the harmonious balance and continue the song.
Fifty years ago, the whenua was a remnant ngahere on the steep river sides, and as kaitiaki we have restored it to a predominantly native area which include many rare Wairarapa rākau and nationally rare rākau that are being progressively returned to where they were formerly found. The privilege of being kaitiaki of this whenua brings with it reciprocal obligations. As a whānau we are consciously enabling the whenua to heal itself, and in turn, providing rongoā for the health of future generations.
The koru takes its shape from the fronds of a mamaku (Cyathea medullaris, native black tree fern). It symbolises creation, and conveys the idea of perpetual movement and a return to the point of origin; thereby symbolising the way in which life both changes and stays the same*. In a healing sense, it reflects the natural rejuvenation and regeneration rongoā Māori brings.
The koru forms the top of the stem for the kawakawa leaf (Macropiper excelsum), a key ingredient infused in our products. The kawakawa leaf is also representative of the various native plants we utilise in our products.
The fresh aqua and river greens symbolise the awa, the purity of the lush bush on the whenua where Waiawa sources its plant material, and the abundance offered therein.
It all comes together in an apothecary style pestle and mortar, which reflects the healing properties of the native plants we use and the careful nurturing approach we take to handcrafting our products for you.
The logo is intentionally rounded and flowing, reflecting connection, balance and sustainability. Our logo is a statement to the world that our products are both good for Te Taiao (the environment) and good for you.
